The brief
E Gucewicz Studios, a London atelier making couture grade experimental eyewear, wanted a collection that kept working after it was sold: two thousand one of one frames, each able to prove what it was, who owned it, and give its owner a reason to keep picking it up. One rule sat above the rest. It had to feel like luxury first. If the technology was the first thing you noticed, it had failed.
What we built together
A design system, not a design
A trait map of shape, material, hinge, lens engraving and finish drove a generative script. Over ten thousand variations, two thousand chosen.
Materials worth the name
Double acetate, aluminium detailing, custom plated hinges, and horn on the rarest pieces. Every frame hand finished in London.
A tag inside the temple arm
Aluminium blocked the signal, so we developed a casing over weeks of lab testing. A second tag in the case keeps ownership if the frame is lost.
A page for every frame
Tap the arm and the frame’s own page opens in the browser: what it is, how it was made, and what is coming for its owner. No app, no wallet.
What we learned
The brief said authentication. Testing said something else. People did not want the frame to prove itself; they wanted it to let them in. We rebuilt the idea around access rather than verification, and that finding has shaped every deployment since. The second lesson was cost: at atelier quality, two thousand one of ones did not clear the cost of making them.
The result
Two thousand pieces designed and prototyped, never sold: the full run did not go to production. Prototypes shown at Breakpoint in Lisbon in November 2022, then presented at Barclays Rise in London as the proof of what a connected object could be.
What happened next
The casing and placement developed for the temple arm became the TapTech hardware standard. The prototypes are kept in the DEPARTMNT archive.
